Beauty in Every Season: a handmade flag book

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22

I constantly marvel at the beauty of this world that God created.  As a small child of five, I still remember discovering the wonder of Autumn as I ran outside in the crisp air, flinging out my hands to the sky and twirling in a kaleidoscope of colorful fall leaves that tumbled about in the wind.  I grew up observing the natural world outside my back door, often outside for hours playing with pinecones, grasses, the little brook, and other such things.  Today I often wonder, with the younger generations growing up on screens - their eyes and hands often focused on their phones - if they will ever truly understand the freedom and opportunities for observation and creative exploration we had before technology.
As a New England child, each new season came with a beautiful array of changes and discoveries that I looked forward to month by month.  In September, my three sisters and I would gather all the fluff we could from the milkweeds and run down the back field toward the house, creating a summer snowstorm all around us. When I had my own children, I tried to instill in them the same sense of wonder and appreciation for this amazing world God created. In spring we knelt in the new grass to watch snails and ants, and we dug in the soil to drop little seeds into the earth.  In summer we ran in the fields to fly kites against a cobalt blue sky and swam and fished in the cool water of the lake.  In autumn we walked though the woods with beautiful falling leaves and picked apples and pumpkins to carve. In winter we bundled up in scarves, hats and mittens to keep out the cold, biting air while we sled down the hills and built snowmen and forts in the snow.
I have always loved Psalms 104, and how God's strength, majesty and glory is described through his intrinsic acts of creating and caring for this world. I love the verses that describe him laying the foundations of the earth, covering the earth with water, causing the grass to grow for the cattle and bread to strengthen the heart of man. One verse in the middle of the chapter sums it up well:
"O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches." Psalm 104:24

I enjoyed exploring the book arts while I made this flag book for one of my sisters.  This sister of mine loves to take long walks in all seasons of the year, so I thought it appropriate to create a book that included all of the months of the year with watercolor illustrations and corresponding poems on the back of each page.
