Micah 6:8 is a call for Christians to become more like Christ. Those who follow Jesus are asked to commit to the action of justice, to love mercy, and to live our lives in humility. This verse uses the verb "walk" as a way to describe how to direct one's life. Many verses in the Bible use the metaphor of walking to enlighten us to the way that God would have us live. How are we to walk? We are to "walk humbly" - in other words - without arrogance and egocentric focus. Christians are to engage in humility as we do justice and love mercy. Below are three of many such verses about how we are to walk through life.
2 Corinthians 5:7 "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
Psalms 1:1 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."
Ephesians 4:1-3 "...that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
Christians are also to "do justice" in a righteous, merciful way that upholds truth. The Bible is full of verses that describe God as the ultimate judge - "I charge you therefore God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom." 2 Timothy 4:1(1)
In addition to justice, Christians are told to "love mercy" in Micah 6:8. The Hebrew word for love here is the word hesed, which is a concept of steadfast love that is most often used to describe God's love. So, for us to understand how to love mercy, we would do well to first understand God's mercy and love toward us. A verse that comes to my mind when I think of this is Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
This mixed media artwork has several layers. The Bible verse overlays a background of spinning compasses and tumbling clock numbers to illustrate the gift of time and the choices of direction and decision that we all have in the one life we are given.
